Who this applies to
This applies to every volunteer and every opportunity listed by Volunnear.
How it works
- Search and sign up as usual. You never pay to see matches.
- If any page or person asks you for a fee, stop and tell a coordinator.
- Read the listing for anything extra, such as a meal or a MetroCard.
- Cancel for free if your plans change.
What to know
- Volunteering is unpaid. There is no stipend.
- There are no application fees.
- Background checks are free to volunteers.
- Cancelling is free, and there is no late cancellation fee.
- Volunnear will never ask for payment details in chat.
- Volunnear does not reimburse transit or other costs unless an opportunity says it does.
- If a listing mentions a cost, such as supplies, that comes from the organization, so ask it before you go.
An example
James in Staten Island wants to tutor but worries about fees. The assistant tells him there is no charge and the role is unpaid. He signs up on the organization's page and pays nothing.
What we cannot do
- Accept payment or donations in chat.
- Pay you a stipend or hourly wage.
- Give tax advice about your hours or costs.
Need a person?
If anyone asks you to pay, tell a coordinator. Say "I was asked to pay a fee for a volunteer shift."
