Do I need a background check?
Only for some roles, and the listing says if one is needed. When one is required, it is free to you, it usually takes about five business days, and you cannot start the shift until it clears.

Who this applies to
This applies to roles that work with children, older adults, or private homes, and to any listing marked as needing a check.
How it works
- Read the background check line on each match.
- If a role needs one and you want to go ahead, tell the assistant you want it arranged.
- The assistant asks a coordinator to start the check with the organization.
- Wait for it to clear. It usually takes about five business days.
- Start your shift only after the check clears.
What to know
- Most listings do not need a background check.
- Roles that work with children, older adults, or private homes usually do.
- The check is free for volunteers.
- The organization or a Volunnear coordinator arranges it.
- A general question about checks does not start one. The check begins only when you say you want that role.
- You cannot start the shift until the check clears.
An example
Ben in Manhattan wants to visit older adults at home. The listing says a background check is needed. He tells the assistant he wants to go ahead, and a coordinator starts the check with the organization. About five business days later it clears, and he picks a shift.
What we cannot do
- Start a check from inside the chat.
- Tell you the result or promise that it will clear.
- Let you start a shift early.
Need a person?
Ask for a coordinator once you pick a role that needs a check. Say "I want this role and need the background check arranged."
