What is the minimum age to volunteer?
Each opportunity lists its own minimum age, and many are 18 and older. Volunteers under 18 should talk to a Volunnear coordinator, who helps find age-appropriate options.

Who this applies to
This applies to every volunteer. It matters most if you are under 18 or you are planning for a teen.
How it works
- Tell the assistant your age if it affects your match.
- Read the minimum age on each match before you sign up.
- If you are under 18, accept the coordinator's help. The assistant offers it as soon as it learns your age.
- If you are under 14, plan for a parent or guardian to come with you.
What to know
- Typical minimum ages are 14, 16, 18, and 21.
- The assistant never shows you a listing with a minimum age above the age you give.
- If a listing does not state a minimum age, it is hidden from anyone under 18, because the age rule cannot be checked.
- A few listings say all ages are welcome. They are shown to everyone, but anyone under 14 still needs a parent or guardian with them for the whole shift.
- Volunteers under 14 must be with a parent or guardian for the whole shift.
- Volunnear does not ask minors for their name or contact details in chat.
An example
Jamal is 16 and lives in the Bronx. He tells the assistant his age and that he likes cooking. The assistant shows only kitchen listings that allow 16 and up, and offers a coordinator for next steps. It does not ask for his name or phone number.
What we cannot do
- Show you a listing you are too young for.
- Change an organization's minimum age.
- Guess an age rule when a listing is silent.
Need a person?
If you are under 18 or you are helping someone who is, ask for a coordinator. Say "I am 16 and want options for my age."
